Educational Outreach: Urban Arts Initiative
The Urban Arts Initiative offers STEAM activities to “at-risk” kids in under-served neighborhoods. Activities include musical improvisation and composition with Garage Band and other computer applications, singing, drawing and painting, recorder playing, improvisational theatre, dance, mindfulness exercises, band instrument instruction, including drums, brass and woodwinds. Science Technology Engineering, Arts, and Math are integrated through activities presented by professionals and college students in these fields. Sponsored by the Greater Midwest Educational Theatre Company, ConCorDance Project, and UCC Immanuel in Dubuque, James Sherry and the Rev. Pamela Starr coordinate the program, working with musical friends, colleagues, and former students to present after-school and weekend programs for elementary school students in a low-income neighborhood. Science professors Dale Easley and Lalith Jayawickrama, engineer Andy Neebel, business professionals Joe Gonzalez and Tyler Shaffer, and musicians Florence Siefker and Bang Lang Do, joined high school mentors Nate Schatz and Brion Bowman for the Fall 2015 session. Other 2015-2016 events included a workshop with environmental engineer/folksinger Dean Mattoon, a field trip to the musical Memphis, and the 10th Annual Imagination Celebration featuring a Junkyard Orchestra led by professional drummer Jimmy Berg.
